“Human rights in Iran media award” goes to NDR author Stefan Buchen

On Thursday, 3. December Stefan Buchen was awarded the “Human rights in Iran media award” by the International Society for Human Rights (IGFM) in Berlin. He received the award for his coverage titled “Censored media – Iranians illegally watch satellite TV”. The report was originally produced for the NDR broadcast “Weltspiegel”; the awarded version of the report was televised in the NDR broadcast “Zapp” on February 4, 2009. Buchen reports on how Iranians despite bans and censorhip connect with the world via satellite TV. The prize was awarded on occasion of the upcoming Day of Human Rights on December 10. Buchen received the prize in the Representation of the state of Schleswig-Holstein to the federal government.

The jury that evaluated the submitted contributions consisted of journalists, media scholars, and human rights activists. The patron of the award is Bundestag President Norbert Lammert. The IGFM already for the third time awarded the Human rights in Iran media prize with a total of 5,000 €. The award is designed to honor journalists and writers who with their coverage contribute to raise awareness for the human rights situation in Iran.
