Hardliner Ayatollah warns opposition

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati is the voice of a strictly conservative caste. This influential politician has warned the Iranian opposition to not stage protests next month.
His warning that was issued during the Friday prayer obviously refers to the date of November 4 – the day that is traditionally used by the Islamic Republic to hold massive rallies commemorating the 1979 takeover of the US-Embassy [in Tehran].
Already in October [sic], the opposition had used the government-staged rallies against Israel to voice their protest against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Opposition websites have announced protests to be held on 4. November.
Following Ahmadinejad’s disputed reelection on June 12, security forces broke down massive protests of the opposition. Ayatollah Jannati is a close ally of Ahmadinejad, and he had previously demanded to put opposition leaders on trial.
