After recent protests in Tehran: Call for global day of action
After the recent mass protests in Iran’s capital Tehran, several human rights organizations have called for a global day of action for human rights and demanded freedom of media in Iran. A statement that was spread in Berlin/Germany says that worldwide rallies of solidarity with the Iranian people will be held on 25 July in order to substantiate a series of claims.
The demands of the organizers, among them Amnesty International, Reporters without Borders and P.E.N., include the release of all “peaceful” political prisoners and a stop to state-backed violence.
Yesterday, for the first time in weeks, hundreds of thousands of protesters against the regime had taken to the streets of Tehran to express their opposition against the rulers. A large amount of police forces was present. According to eyewitness reports, people were arrested, and tear gas was used against the protesters.
